Last summer, we got early access to GPT-3, a powerful language generation model from OpenAI. ย The model learned how to talk by reading trillions of words from the internet.
That means GPT-3 is knowledgeable about almost any topic.
When we tried it out, the quality and creativity blew our minds ๐คฏ.
So we started building simple GPT-3 powered apps and shared them with our friends on Twitter.
We built each side project using software like Figma, Webflow, Notion, Stripe, and Slack which allowed us to iterate quickly.
But each time we set up a new app, we spent the most time writing the marketing copy. It was a super frustrating experience ๐ฉ.
We thought we might not be the only people with this marketing problem, so we built a simple tagline generator to find out.
We launched it on Twitter, got a few hundred signups and found our first paying customers in the first week.
Next, we added more tools for website, email, and social media use cases. In the process, we discovered that the copy.ai domain name was available, so we decided to rebrand. We invited some friends to beta test the new app, but we started seeing other people sign up even though we hadn't launched yet! So we decided it was time for another Twitter launch. This time we had over 2,000 users sign up in the first 48 hours. We'd found our rocket ship ๐.
Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of that launch.
Since then, over 380,000 people have used copy.ai to create marketing copy for their businesses.
That's allowed us to reach $2.4 million in recurring revenue from over 5,000 paying customers in over 50 countries ๐.
We think we're only scratching the surface of what's possible with these new AI models.
As more content gets uploaded to the internet, the AI models will become more knowledgeable. That makes our copywriting application increasingly accurate and useful. This new flywheel of knowledge and utility will allow us to create natural language applications that can learn about a business and become the AI digital twin needed to help grow the business.
Over the next 10 years, these applications will fuel a creative explosion by helping over 1 billion people become new entrepreneurs.
This makes us incredibly optimistic about the future ๐.
To support that vision and build the next generation of our product, we are looking to expand our team.
Thatโs why we're so excited today to announce that weโve raised $11 million in Series A funding from Wing Ventures, Craft Ventures, Sequoia, Tiger Global, and Elad Gil along with many other new and existing investors ๐.
With this funding, we plan to double the size of our amazing team by the end of next year.
We are hiring engineers, recruiters, product designers, and copywriters.
We'd love for you to join us and help us build the future of AI writing and collaboration ๐.
